January is National Mentoring Month, and this year, the Florida Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs is celebrating mentorship and spotlighting its impacts on BGC youth. The mentoring programs at Boys & Girls Clubs connect young people to positive adult mentors who notice their strengths, listen to their concerns, and open up doors of possibility. Florida's Clubs offer one-on-one; small group; and peer mentoring to each child that walks through our blue doors.
In 2023, over 210,000 youth participated in at least one of our mentoring models, with just under 85,000 mentoring sessions taking place over the course of the school year. Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing youth with the tools to make positive choices, attend and engage in school, and reduce or avoid risky behaviors. In turn, these young people are more likely to enroll in college; participate regularly in sports and other extracurricular activities; and volunteer regularly in their communities.
National Mentoring Month is led by MENTOR, the national unifying champion of the mentoring movement. MENTOR was created more than 30 years ago to expand opportunities for young people by building a youth mentoring field and movement. Today, MENTOR is the expert voice representing a movement that meets young people everywhere they are - including their out-of-school time programs!
